P.Nigra Color Transformation Observation
I have noticed that P.Nigra is popular with Los Angeles based landscape designers,I've started noticing it in several locations(Ion Bar J.W. Marriot DTLA & in the courtyard of the mall on Sunset & Crescent Heights to name a few). The P.Nigra is contained in concrete planters & topped &am...

Re: Phyllostachys Identification
In my initial post I did not make it clear that the photos were of the new shoots in the adjacent yard. Here are some additional photos: http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z47/cee323/P1010456copy.jpg http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z47/cee323/P1010457copy.jpg As I previously stated the shoots are...

Phyllostachys Identification
My neighbor(who has since relocated) planted bamboo to create a privacy screen along a cinder block wall. The bamboo has become established & began sending shoots underneath the foundation of the retaining wall into the adjacent yard. I was wondering if anybody can identify the variety. The cane...

P.Nigra Leaf Scorch
My P.Nigra suffers from leaf scorch. I was wondering if there is a way to prevent this. The plant is in full sun. I have read that this may be due to the PH balance in the soil & or over watering. I've had several new shoots this growing season with lush green new foliage & unfortunately the...

Nest in The P.Nigra
This morning while inspecting my P.Nigra's new shoots I discovered a nest in the bamboo. My P.Nigra is quite dense so I suppose this why the birds chose to build a nest in it.

This Season's P.Nigra Shoots
Here are photos of some of the first shoots my P.Nigra has sent up this growing season. There are additional shoots coming up in the center of the plant but they were hard to document because they are camouflaged by waste leaf. http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z47/cee323/P1010280copy.jpg http://i1...

Re: P.Nigra Color Transformation
Here are some additional photos of my P.Nigra if you look closely you can see one of the new shoots. I did a little more research & apparently color transformation can take anywhere from 1-3 years,I guess I just have to be a little more patient. http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w127/midcentury...

P.Nigra Color Transformation
I started my P.Nigra from a 15 gallon in Oct.'08. To date I don't have a solid black culm. Last year several shoots appeared the tallest one is in excess of 15ft. I read that the canes turned black within a year. I have several canes which are jet black @ the base which are accented beautifully by t...

Full Sun Application Recommendation
I was wondering if anyone had a recommendation for a bamboo(preferably a clumping variety) that is suited for full sun. My P.Nigra's leaves are scorched & rather unsightly(IMHO) a stark contrast from when it was initially planted. I was unaware that they are not recommended for full sun applicat...

Re: Shooting P.Nigra
Some of the shoots pictured are "whip shoots" but there are actual shoots in the center of the plant that I could not photograph due to the waste leaf.

Shooting P.Nigra
After today's rains I went outside a took a look @ my Nigra & I discovered several new shoots. In late December/early January Los Angeles had record rains, when I returned on January 5th I discovered new shoots. Prior to the rains we had a few days days of triple digit temperatures. Typically my ...

Bamboo Swap
I've finally located affordably priced Bambusa Lako in the Los Angeles area. I'm considering removing the Nigra that I planted in Nov. of '08 & replacing it with Lako. I had issues with the rhizomes & whip shoots & I would feel more comfortable with a clumping variety. However I was wond...

Receiving Bamboo Via Post in California
In my quest to purchase Bambusa Lako I came across several growers in South Florida. However I've been informed that they are not willing to ship plants to California due to the amount of paperwork that must accompany the shipment & I was also informed that the plants are place in quarantine whe...

The Neverending Nigra Rhizome
In my first post( http://www.bambooweb.info/bb/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=4636 ) I discussed the difficulty I've had in removing a Nigra rhizome that has lodged itself under concrete. Well I left the trench open & today I discovered new growth on the rhizome that has been severed from the mother p...

Rhizome Removal
I made the mistake of planting a Phyllostachys Nigra without a barrier. Even though I have been quite vigilant a rhizome was able to travel a distance from the mother plant & wedge itself under concrete & send up a shoot. At the time of my previous post I was unable to locate it. I have sinc...
