RE: Best way to amend clay soil????
I used this product on my soil: http://www.earlmay.com/cart/viewitem.php?itemno=708032&catid=145 It is essentially granules of clay pots. Since it is fired, it doesn't stick together and keeps the clay from sticking together but still retains moisture. I prepared all my bamboo beds with it befor...

If you are not in a hurry to acidfy your soil, you can just put some organic mulch on it like tree bark or grass clippings now, before winter. By late spring the ph should drop by a point or so.

RE: who here scoffs at the idea of rhizome barriers?
Scoff, scoff :) I looked into rhizome barriers for my garden when I first started growing bamboo. It was going to cost a lot of money and be a lot of work, and then it still might not work. When I found out about rhizome pruning one a year, I was a convert. My bamboo has been in the ground for 3 yea...

RE: Seeding and death
I don't think most bamboo produces seeds in pods. Can you post a picture of the seed pods?

RE: Cold Death!
My yellow groove and Ph. rubromaginata had put up some shoots. Those that had grown to the point that the culm was exposed were killed by the frost. They simply flopped over. The shoots that were entirely covered by their sheaths look fine though.

RE: Corn
I have seen giant corn growing in someone's front yard. It was a little higher than his gutter, which is probably 8 feet tall. I was amazed when I saw it and wondered how they got it to get so big.

RE: 2007 Boo Shooting Season! : Not just for tropicals anymo
I just saw some Ph. atrovaginata shoots today, one of which is about 3 or 4 inches long already. We have had some warm, wet weather recently. This is about two weeks earlier than last year. I also saw one small Ph. vivax 'aureocaulis' shoot under the mulch that I scraped back today. Considering that...

RE: Phyllostachys elegans blooming
I am going to try some gibberelic acid on some of the seeds to see if that helps. I have tried this on other types of seeds, but I am unimpressed so far. No shoots yet except the one that it put up right after I got it. There is another flower starting to bloom and the one that I posted the picture ...

Phyllostachys elegans blooming
This is a new flower of a Phyllostachys elegans that is just starting to bloom. I got this plant from David last fall because I wanted to see a bamboo flower first hand. Very cool.

RE: Are any Bamboo CAM (C4) like sugar cane and Arundo donax
Here is another on that says bamboo is a C4 plant: http://www.oprins.com/bamboonetwork/publications/SILVIHORTICULTURE%20.pdf All of these sources seem to be pretty confident of their assertion. None of these admit to any sort of scientific debate about whether bamboo is C3 or C4. So why is there con...

I remember reading that recently too, so I was able to find the link:

RE: what about buried power lines?
How deep are the lines? If they are more than a foot deep, then you probably don't need to worry about it. I have Ph. rubromarginata planted near my property line next to a buried TV cable. I prune the rhizomes a few times in the fall to keep it out of my neighbors' yards. You can do this if you are...
