Re: Fuel Oil as a Fertilizer

oobmab - I did not add diesel to the motor oil - I have noticed the grass underneath the oil had died. I am waiting to see if the sides of these stripes turn green,,,which they seem to be doing already, both on the new oil and used oil.

Re: Fuel Oil as a Fertilizer

I have a small field in the back. I've put down a quart of fresh motor oil in a thin stripe, and used motor oil in another stripe. I'll let you guys know what happens via photos.

Re: Tips on relocating an actively shooting grove of P. dul

I've dug them up in the middle of summer with no ill effects. You might not get the tall bamboos, but they will send out survival shoots. As needmore said, I cut them in 6 foot strands of roots & rhizomes and whatever canes that came with them. I chopped off the taller canes. I placed them in la...

Re: Fuel Oil as a Fertilizer

I had the same response when he told me. At first I thought he was putting me on, then I realized he wasn't. He owns hundreds of acres in this county, now all in corn and soybean that a company grows for him,,he collects a check at the end at the end of the season. Then, I spoke to another farmer he...

Re: Vivax advice needed

Here is a Vivax I planted 3 years ago as a twig in 2011 - the original is still there and less than 1/4 inch. This has spread to about 9 feet from the 'twig' and sent up a one inch culm this spring. The others that sprang up this spring were less than 1 inch. I suspect next years culms will be 2 inc...

Fuel Oil as a Fertilizer

I was told by a local farmer, that fuel oil (used and new) were used on fields as a fertilizer for growing corn and wheat. Apparently this was used up until the 60's. He said that bacteria in the soil would eat the fuel oil and convert it into fertilizer. He also said that this was practiced for man...

Re: Zone 6 bamboo

Hi Steve - I guess this is year 3 since I planted the parvifolia you sent me. All three plantings sent up a single 'shoot' which seems to be a healthy half inch by 3 feet tall, and still growing. What is growing like gangbusters is Vivax and Bessetii - the Vivax sent up numerous shoots about 1 inch ...

David Farrelly - "The Book of Bamboo - A comprehensive guide to this remarkable plant, It's Uses and it's History. All of the books mentioned above are great! This seems to be the ultimate and I've been referring to to it constantly. rich Here's a Review - Editorial Reviews From the Inside Flap...
