Re: Private Victoria BC Bambusoides grove this year
Well, I agree with with you to a point. But when the palms are over 60-80 years old or older it does say something about the cold in the area. Duration of cold is important as you point out.

Re: Private Victoria BC Bambusoides grove this year
Thanks for the reply! Being a scientist I had to look at the climate averages, I assume I must have the wrong weather station for Victoria, because it looks like our winter is terrible (it is), but your summer is just as bad... Do you have an inland island station? http://www.theweathernetwork.com/...

Re: Private Victoria BC Bambusoides grove this year
Hmm Z6 timber bamboo. Well, I think P.Vivax is your best option or Red margin (Rubromaginata). Both grow in Z6 areas in China.
The bigger it gets the hardier it will become.

Re: Private Victoria BC Bambusoides grove this year
Well, we aren't really all that cool in summer here as we are in the rain shadow and are classed as being Csb or Coastal Med. My average High summer temps for July/ Aug are around ~24c with low humidity. Watering is a must. We don't have your hot and humid summers which is unfortunate. Plants need w...

Re: Private Victoria BC Bambusoides grove this year
Here are some new updated pics of the grove.
Tallest culm is just shy of 39ft tall and is 3.35" dia.
Again this was all done in ~4.5-5 growing years just South of Victoria BC Canada.

Re: Vancouver Island
Yes, indeed. Tofino as it is properly named is a very unique area. Winter is very warm in this part of the PNW because of the warm current off the coast. There are all sorts of exotic plants growing there. You probably saw the many Cordyline Australis(es) growing around the town of Tofino. I do know...

Re: Infrared pictures of bamboo
This is NOT an true IR picture but what is often known as a NIR picture. You are using a modded CCD or CMOS sensor to capture 750nm - 1400nm (1.4㎛) If a CCD or CMOS based camera can see an IR remote strobing then it can be modded to capture this spectrum of light. This kind of IR is know as IR-A A t...

Re: Vancouver Island bamboo society/grow team?
Yes, we need a Vancouver Island and or BC grow society. Reason is simple. Our province has the only suitable long term climate suitable for growing bamboos. I plan on heading back to Vancouver Island (Victoria area) and woking more on my grove and starting a new P.edulis grove from a 15 or 20gal siz...

Private Victoria BC Bambusoides grove this year
Hi there, I am still living in Seoul, Korea but I got pics back from home in Victoria BC Canada. I have broken 3" mark after 5 growing years. I got this bamboo as a 15gal from the Saltspring Island plant farm back in August of 2004. Culms this year are over 3" across dia x ~35-37ft tall! L...

Re: PNW bamboo observations
Well, first of all you know that latitude has very little influence on climate, and there are whole host of other factors that determine zone-age. Good example is UK in the far south near Cornwall it is a Z9a and has Camphor Laurels and Cycads there (dry winter climate). It is 50Degrees North Latitu...

Re: PNW bamboo observations
Well, I interesting you mention it, but P.Pubescens grows in some pretty cold climates. I have personally seen in growing in places that easily drop to -23c in winter, or about -0.5F. Anyways... I think it needs lots of nutrition and heat to perform well. It seems to only like to be divided / plante...

Re: Putting layer of manure on grove
Holy cow, somebody copy and paste this info into the wiki! Great info! I didn't realize that those high-N fertilizers were only-N fertilizers. Don't the boos need the other nutrients too, or is Nitrogen the most important one? With grasses, nitrogen is the most important fertilizer. Grasses are hea...
