RE: Bamboo Books
Paul Whittaker, David Crompton and Mike Bell are all based in England although Paul Whittaker's book, in particular, makes reference to growing in the US. All of these are of tremendous benefit for someone near the beginning of the learning curve and I srill refer to "Ornamental Bamboos" f...

RE: Parvifolia 'Yellow Stripe' ?
Mark. Was it Parvifolia that put up a yellow or yellow striped culm for you last year? Did you separate it?
I have a Ph, a. "Harbin Invera that's pushed up a culm this year that seems to be half green half yellow, as opposed to just a coloured sulcus.

RE: variegated rufa
Don't you mean "another rufa that isn't actually rufa?"
I would also be vary wary of the statement . "our plants are grown in shade tunnels and do not show colour on dispatch"

That's really useful, Thanks Mike. Jeez, I didn't realize how cold it got! Brrrrr. This winter, people here were complaining about how cold it was if the temps got anywhere near freezing (0c). We're all going soft over here :D I know the West Coast fairly well and a few other bits of the States but ...

Growing Bamboo In Kentucky.
My brother, who has lived in Arizona for the past 5 years is moving to Kentucky. Now I don't know an awful lot about the weather there but it certainly seems a lot greener than the cactus grove where he is now! Is there anyone out that way who is growing bamboos happily and is there a good supplier ...

I would have thought that was pushing it a bit, however, the USDA zone system doesn't tell the whole story. My part of England is supposed to be zone 8 ish but we can grow lots of zone 9 plants. Our neighbours, however, can't because of a totally different microclimate.

RE: which phyllostachys has bigger leaves?
I would second the suggestion of Semiarundinaria okuboi although not for a windy site - it gets a bit tatty looking for part of the year.
My other suggestion is Fargesia robusta "Wolong". Clumping and big leaves.

RE: Borinda Yunnan4?
I had this planted outside for its first winter this year. It was far milder than usual but we had a couple of -6c nights and we had some snow. Mine is fine apart from some minor frost damage to the leaves. It's actually in the process of replacing these right now so it's still healthy.

I agree with the others. lose the mutt!!!
Seriously, I used to have terrible problems with deer but after trying numerous methods of keeping them out, the one thing that seemed to do it was a wind chime made from, of all things, bamboo!
