Weed control

Due to my dog's love of eating bamboo, I have all my boo fenced in with 4ft fencing. The problem I have encountered is that the weeds in Florida grow about as tall as my boo if I let em. I have been to this point pulling out by hand as much as possible, but the fence makes it difficult. Would a simp...

RE: Unwanted boo guests

Well, I came back from vacation (was gone a week) and the little suckers ate *every* leaf off of a row of cuttings I had on the side of my house. The only thing they didn't touch was my Lako. Most of the cuttings were a bit on the dry side too, so they bit the dust. The vulgaris and clone-x cuttings...

Propagating through cuttings

Being a complete novice at propagating bamboo, I looked on the internet and found a couple of guides on the process. Though several varied on where to cut in relation to the node, how many branches and how many leaves to reduce, which part of the culm to use, etc., I have tried with 2 different clum...

Potted Bamboo

I've been looking at this Kimmei that I've had in a pot since December and thinking its probably time for a bigger pot or putting it in the ground. http://www.herzek.net/boo/july07/upsize.jpg Its been very bushy in the pot, not sure if its the species or because its in a pot. I would like to find so...

What I neglected to say is that I also had about a 20 lb root ball with no culms from the same grove. I "planted" it in the yard, and forgot where. OOOPS.

Re: RE: Unwanted boo guests

No pics... I have problems with rats from time to time that munch on my new branch buds and new shoots from time to time in the city. I just put out traps and that slows them down for a while. At the farm, I mainly have problems with rabbits, but with so much rain lately, they haven't touched my bo...

Re: RE: My potted B. lako decided it likes where it's living

Hi Ryan, Glad the Lako is doing great. They grow very quickly. I move most of mine from the 3 gallon starter pots to 15 gallon and then 38 gallon if I don't put them in the ground. Your boo should start putting up new shoots pretty quick. I remember the first shoot and wondering if it would stay sm...

Re: RE: Any ideas?

Looks like B. ventricosa, especially with the slightly enlarged culm near the node, and the white band as well. The leaves seem to be about the same size for its age, although I could be wrong. I guess we will have to wait for someone with a bit more experience. That was my guess. I compared the le...

And another...

Another clumping bamboo. I found a broken piece with a bit of root ball and put it in a 1 gallon pot and it grew into this: http://www.herzek.net/boo/july07/littleboo.jpg http://www.herzek.net/boo/july07/littleboo2.jpg I know its probably wishful thinking at this point of its growth, but any ideas?

Unwanted boo guests

I've seen a lot of these critters lately. I think they are what is eating all my cutting's leaves that I planted in the ground, and several of the in-ground boo in my yard. They're all about this big... what can I do? The ones in pots seem to be a bit better protected, the one in the picture is the ...

Any ideas?

I wish I had gotten pictures of the mother clump... didn't think about it. The owner did not know what it was and just wanted it gone. I put the stump and root ball in the ground and also did some cuttings and its doing well. http://www.herzek.net/boo/july07/huhboo.jpg http://www.herzek.net/boo/july...

Re: Branch buds or no branch buds...

The Clone X that Ryan dug out of my backyard the other day did not have any branch buds up to about the 10 to 12 foot mark. But low and behold, once we got it loaded, we did see a branch bud on the first basal node (about 6 to 8 inches up from the ground, if I remember correctly). Some pictures... ...
