hangin' ten with henon

Post by Eastlandia »

My P. Nigra 'Henon' "grove" is quite nice this year. Each of the culms comes up and weeps at the top. I think we had someone earlier this year complaining about their henon and how it doesn't weep.....i have nothing to complain about here. -eastlandia

E .... Nice looking Grove.
Does it get burned or slowed down in the typical winter?
How long do you expect it to take to get mature? Or at least LARGE ?
This year I have started Henon and hoping for the best and bigger. I been putting cow manure on them, and they are doing well.

Texas winters wont be as bad as ours in Indiana... In good spots, Henon can be a giant. In fact, if you don't know, Henon seems to be the mother type of the nigras. Ive seen henon listed at 70 feet at maturity, or as low as 30 feet.
In Indiana however I think I would be lucky to get 15. This grove will soon have a cover over it when it cools down. I'm hoping I can keep the plant warm enough to keep green leaves and increase shoot size.
I have two goats that provide me with manure...it works quite well. Needmore used to use cow manure until he went crazy because of the voles.
My Henon got burnt out two years ago, but hopefully now that its older it can keep a few leaves. Last year BC didn't get under O degrees F. Hopefully this year will be the same. -eastlandia
