My kids are just off to bed (aged 3 and 5) and wonder what kind of snake that is. We don't have anything like it here in England.

It's called Brown Vine snake (Oxybelis aeneus). Tropical in distribution (in this case Nayarit Mexico).
It's relatively timid, but very easy to grab by mistake when hiking or walking thru brush. It is mildly venomous -- but not any more serious than a mild bee sting for most people.
I've mistakenly grabbed them several times and have never been bitten - so they really are quite shy.

There is something about snakes......... I won't grab them even if they are shy. UUrrrrggghh!
