Introduction

Post by bamboonewf »

Just thought I would introduce myself to you all. I am fairly new to bamboo but seriously addicted. I have 28 different types planted here in central Newfoundland Canada. This is the second winter for some of them.
I think the temperate bamboo have great potential here: our frost free period is from early May till the end of October, summer highs around 25C with cool nights, winter lows around -23C but only for an hour or so when it happens maybe 3 times per winter, terrible winds though. Plenty of precipitation all year. Soil is 9 acres of organic, 40 of mineral....lots of room to expand!

I am in the process of catching up on all the posts here, looking forward to learning lots!

USDA Zone 6B (possibly 7A/7B/8A depending on who you ask around here, so I am sticking with the most conservative estimate for now)

Elevation 700 feet
Constant winds (10-20 MPH)

Hi Glenda!

Welcome and it's great to have another cold environment boo lover here to contribute! Yes it is addicting, but I consider it a good addiction myself... :D

If you get time, I'd like to see some of the species of bamboo you are growing. It is fairly easy to add to your profile. I too get gusty winds, so it'll be interesting to compare notes as time goes on (I'm new to boo, so this will be my first shooting season coming up!).

EDIT: OK, I clicked on your link and worked my way to the "Bamboo, Palms, Bananas and More" link. What palms are you growing? Trachycarpus fortuneii (the Chinese Windmill, aka Chusan), or something else? I just planted some of those seeds a couple weeks back, and am hoping to try them out here! I also like your Oyster or Mussel shell mulch!

Hi Sven

Yes I have Trachycarpus fortuneii and also T. Takil outside and several seedlings inside. As for the mussel shell mulch, I like the look of it and we do eat a lot of mussels, well crushed they keep the slugs away too.

The winds here can get up to 100km but usually only in the fall, all the bamboo tolerated that fine, its the cold wind combined with the sunshine that is the problem here. All that were under the snow (4'+) remained green, my Rufa however seems happy through anything. Since the snow has melted considerably I expect I will lose more leaves to the wind and sun.

I can't wait for shooting time but that's a ways off me yet, spring comes late here!

Welcome onboard Glenda!

It looks like you have a wonderful haven out there in Gambo!
I'm relatively close to Munich and I certainly understand the climate you're describing (well apart from having beaches and a seal wondering through vineyards!! :)).

I'm only beginning to develop an interest in growing grapes myself and your web page is certainly interesting. I'll be bookmarking it if you don't mind! :)

Best of luck with the bamboos and vineyards!
cheers,
Adrian.
