Unknown flowering bamboo. Have pics...
Hi there. My sister and I both have several types of bamboo so we are occasionally trading divisions. This is the only one we don't know the identity too and it turns out it is also flowering. She has a 10 foot stretch on the back of her property where this division came from. It has a grayish waxy coating over the green culms, short green leaves, no sulcus groove, multiple branches off of each internode and it's about 7 feet tall here in the Pacific Northwest. Does anyone know what this is? I checked online for a list of currently flowering bamboos and couldn't find anything.

Is this stumping everyone? Could it be fargesia nitida? That one seems to have the most similarities and is also known to be flowering right now. Anyone have any thoughts?

How long have you guys had the Bamboo. If it's a short time and it's tissue culture Bamboo that may explain the flowering.
I think a lot of nitida bamboos finished flowering a few years ago , but I could well be wrong. The blue colour could suggest one of the borinda's. The source of the Bamboo would help as none specialty nurseries would have commom types of Bamboo for sale and TC clumpers. If it's from a Bamboo nursery then it could be a rarer type. If it's a gift Bamboo from private source then it could also be a rare one that someone brought back from travels.
There is also the blue hooker Bamboo that could well survive in mild NW climates. I'll look up the real name, it was popular in Europe many years ago , so perhaps also in the US. It's been around for so long one would think it's time for it to flower.
That's all I got at the moment.
Best Wishes
Steve
p.s. If there is any sign of mature seeds , please put a nylon stocking over the entire culm and try to collect the seeds.
plant seeds right away as they are normally only viable for a short time. Or send them to me

Huh, my reply didn't seem to work. Probably user eror, lol. Hey thanks for the help. The link you posted sure has similarites and has got me wondering. On the seeds, unfortunately I have allready planted them and given the rest away. But if I do have luck in growing some I will be happy to share with you if you'd like. Since this came from a division of an already unknown plant I am pretty much stumped. I guess all I can hope for is that the seeds sprout and survive giving me healthy plants to try and identify.
