It really varies widely... my B. multiplexes shoot 10 months out of the year... only stop for Jan. & Feb. The D. minor 'Amoenus' are definitely late shooters for me... don't shoot until June/July.

Besides the multiplexes, the ones that I'm expecting to see shoot first are the B. doli. 'Silverstripe' and 'Green Stripe'. If I don't see new shoots by the beginning of April I'll be surprised.

Brad,

Same thinking here. If we have more rainfall than usual in the Spring, then my B. malingensis will start popping up in April. It's usually my first one to shoot. My B. oldhamii normally starts shooting around mid-July. Of course, with abnormal Winter rains I can get a Christmas bamboo shoot on occasion:

(Note the sweatshirt and jeans the new shoot is pointing at during Christmas break)

We've already gotten over 13" of rain this spring, and there is more to come this week. :D

Even though we have gotten more rain this Winter than usual, it was 40 F a few nights ago. I'm working in shorts and no shirt today, but we are still in the mid to low 70's in Tampa.

No rain here yet, but I did flood the farm with irrigation water. I added a little nitrogen to the water... let's see how the boo like that.

IIRC, last year I saw my first shoot of the season March 16th last year, so I've been watching for new shoots this year. The time is very, very close!

My Bamboo List.

The legal issues that will arise when the undead walk the earth are legion, and addressing them all is well beyond what could reasonably be accomplished in this brief Essay. Indeed, a complete treatment of the tax issues alone would require several volumes.

I just went back and read through the 2007 shooting thread. I'm getting antsy.

N. California - B. fargessi, Yellow Groove, Pl. argenteostiata, Dwarf Whitestripe. Normal rain patterns and temps in mid 60's to low 70's this month. Very conducive to shooting. Rgds

Well, we just had a frost a couple of nights ago and were in the mid 20's. Surprisingly, when I looked today, my B Malingensis, my "unknown" e-bay bambusa, my P Aureosulcata "aureocaulis" and my P Vivax are all shooting. Nothing else yet from anyone else!

Bud,

Welcome to the "posting world" on Bambooweb.info. Hopefully this one isn't your last. They say "seeing is believing", so if you have a digital camera you can upload some pictures of your bamboo here:

serenityinbamboo,

Do you know how cold it got at your place (North Florida) about 6 weeks ago?

a week ago, starting mar 3, i had the first culms show on seven species within 72 hours (ph. praecox, aurea, elegans ,aureosulcata spectabalis, dulcis; psuedosas jap. tsutsu.; and hibanobambusa tranquillans shir.)
i thought it was a pretty tight clustering event.
i expect my inground moso to pop this sunday (mar 16)as it did the two previous years. ; don't expect the ph bambusoides types, or vivax types, or viridis ry, or rubro , or nigra types for another month. but i'm still looking every day, 2 or 3 times...

According to our outside thermometer we were at 19*! Pretty freaking cold for Florida (as my husband calls it..South Georgia). We had an extremely hard frost that looked like snow. I had about a quarter inch of ice on my car when I went to work that I had to scrap off!

On a side note... I noticed today as I walked around when I got home that my p nigra and my p nigra daikokuchiku and my (as we identified it last year) p bambusoides "castillon" all have new shoots! Bring on Spring!!!

serenityinbamboo,

What I thinking was that the cold damage to your tropicals was what was causing them to shoot so early. The temperates seem to be on schedule.
