Phylo. dulcis and bambusoides shooting
RE: 2008 Boo Shooting Diary
one new shoot on B. textilis 'Kanapaha' plus a surprise
I just noticed some flowers starting. This plant I collected last year from 5 different divisions. I only see one of five divisions putting out flowers. Is their any other known bamboo that is scheduled to flower now?

This one surprised me!
Pleioblastus kongosanensis 'Aureostriatus' has put up a shoot. Considering I thought it was dead, but it is now showing signs of life.
-----------
Melocanna baccifera shoots continue to grow. Tomorrow they should be taller than the "stump" in the center of the pot.
No signs of life from the other M. b. root ball.

It could be stress related. Be sure to gather and distribute seeds!wfoster wrote:I just noticed some flowers starting. This plant I collected last year from 5 different divisions. I only see one of five divisions putting out flowers. Is their any other known bamboo that is scheduled to flower now?

Bad news here. It's been going down to 0 and -2 Celcius at night here. Sigh! I will just have to sit back and wait.

Well Joe, it has not been like that here too! I had to (read: worried like a mother hen, I insanely ran out each morning to uncover, and evening, to cover) protect my C. tumidissinoda shoots from the cold we have been having.
its warming up, so we will probalby see a ton of activity this month.

RE: 2008 Boo Shooting Diary
Fred, two questions:
I know that we had the wire lined hole discussion already, it looks like the arisitus is one that you lined the planting hole on. Any problems with it?
second, how long on the glauca 'yunzhu' before you see markings on the culms? I have two plants that have identical shoots, and look the same culm and foliage wise, one from a friend, one from a dig. the one from the dig was a small division, with small, new cums, no color, but the parent plant was awsome. the one from a freind had no ID, and was mostly dead in the pot. after seeing them shoot the last couple of years, I'm reasonably sure they are the same plant, however, no coloring on either. since last year was the first year they sent decent culms, which are now in the 8-10' range, Im wondering when I should see the markings develop if in fact they are glauca yunzhu.

RE: 2008 Boo Shooting Diary
Gene - I use wire until there is a large root mass, then I start digging the wire out. The gophers tend to go for an easy meal and stay away from a tough large root mass. As I mentioned before, best to dig the wire straight down a couple of feet, as opposed to covering the bottom. This year I took out about 30% of the wire surrounding the aristatus and took out the division I'm holding for you. This plant is another shade plant. It can get major sun burn in late summer that stunts the new culms. Mine is fine until late July. I'm going to gradually move divisions to better locations. For folks who want Mexican Weeping but have low temps that would kill off Mexican Weeping, this species is a great substitute.
Assume you are talking about the black spots on the yunzhu. I have not really put much time on observing the spots. Seems like they are more prevalent on culms over 1/2 inch. I really like the branching most. A very unusual profile for a Phyllostachys. This plant looks can develop a Asian garden style feel/look in cold weather climates.

RE: 2008 Boo Shooting Diary
Thanks for the answers Fred!
The parent grove of one of my yunzhu was pretty well cared for, and thinned out well, all the culms were 1" or so, so that explains why I have not seen any color, unless I did not get the yunzhu! I dug it on the back corner of thier property where they did not bother to trim and thin. the rest is along a street, between the sidewalk, and a block wall, and is visually very stunning. I know what you mean by an unusual profile for phy. species. This year one of them has two shoots that look to be in the 1/2" to 3/4" range, but it is still early to be sure. the other plant I dug out and planted in a full sun location last fall, so not sure what it is going to do this year, no shoots yet, which is strange. it shot at the same time as the other last year.
I cant wait for the arisitus!
