bamboo ideas?

Post by yard e »

the short covered bamboo in the pic is Rufa. will not achieve the height and growth, i expected. looking to transplant that elsewhere??? would like ideas on what to plant in its place, continuing to the end of the yard?

think that Bissettii, Atro, or Rubro maybe a good choice heard that Bissettii should grow the thickest, fastest and is the most hardy.

woundn't mind trying to mix them up a little bit w/o getting mix together, (will use full barrier)

does anyone have any of these Bamboo in the metro detroit area??? would need about 15-20 plants. approx. 80ft

I would go with the bissetti, as it is one of the most if not the most cold hardy. .

Hey dude.

Im up in NW ontario. DEpending on the source, 1 or 2 zones lower then you. Fargesia Rufa isnt a bad choice for your climate at all. I dont believe it would even need protection in a decent spot. I would move it where it gets some dappled light, under some tall shrubs or trees. They like sun, but they need some shade during the middle of the afternoon, even up here!

I know a few people growing bamboo in your general area. He reccommended P Bisetti, and P areosulcata "spectabolis". I was also told to try plain ole P areosulcata, or areosulcata alata.

I grow Rufa, and p areosulcata alata. Alata, hasnt done as well as it should here (my fault, I set it back a year or 2). THe winters are a bit too harsh here for a month or 2, so it gets buried under leaves, and then tarped. THis will be its 3rd summer, and Im hopefing to see some good shoots this year, seeing as it didnt last year.

I hope the S ontario growers pipe up for ya. THeyll be able to give you way better info!
