Is this one end of the rhizome or could it be a new shoot (which I doubt)?

Although it's a bit obscured by potting soil, that's likely a rhizome piece (or if it isn't attached to your plant, a broken twig).
New shoots appear pale and symmetrical and tend to be cleaner because they grow rapidly.

It's one piece with the rest of the rhizome, there were no twigs in the soil mix. I can't wait to see new shoots in spring. Thank you, jd.
