Well, we ended up with about 4.5 inches yesterday. So now the ground is quite saturated, although my neighboorhood was not flooded in for long. I've taught my 2 year old to sing "Dean, Dean go away"

Next week will be most interesting. As forcasts now stand Dean should be hitting Texas or Mexico Thursday or Friday and hit hard.

Rain, Rain GO AWAY!!!

Post by Mike McG »

Well we got about an inch and a half of rain from Erin. Our pastures are contoured but it looks like it all soaked in.

Marcat,
From the weather maps it looks like some of the areas down near you got 4-8 inches of rain this week so I would think the soil is pretty well saturated in some of those areas and could not handle much more without flooding.

It looks like Dean is a Cat 3 and predicted to peak at a Cat 4 and then drop back to a Cat 3 in the western Gulf. Right now most the predictions look for it to come ashore in Mexico but it could be real close to Allen. However, as everyone on the Gulf and East Coasts knows, hurricanes have a bad habit of not reading and following what they are supposed to do.

I hope everyone in Dean's path stays safe.

Looks like we only got 2.95" yesterday. Better than nothing, but I didn't bother turning the sprinklers off this morning.

Hey Outlaw... I'll bet your boo is really BIG.

I just got back from the farm... I still have parts under water. Luckily, they are areas with no boo.

I have been doing a lot of rearranging of the dirt lately. I had the drainage ditch area of the property built up by 4 feet. After all the rain, run off from that dirt changed the way the rest drained.

I went out and drove my truck back and forth to create small drainage areas in case it pours.

You should see my B. Oldhamii. I didn't think it would grow that large in terms of diameter here.

Indeed, but since around here we haven't had a drop of rain in weeks...

I measured my Oldhamii last week for Roy. It was just over 4.25" diameter. This has not topped out here as each year they have been pushing up bigger shoots. This started out as a single culm division on 2002.

I will need to get a height measurement on this and Clone X. I was a little surprized when I looked up last week and saw how much taller to current crop of culms were compared to last year.

It's that Texas Viagra Water! With the rains Texas is getting, perhaps 5 inch B. oldhamii is in the near future for Texas. I was just reading some research on the importance of water to bamboo and it seems to indicate that water is more important than fertilizer to the growth of bamboo.

I think my B. Oldhamii is just over 3.25 inches this year. Still growing...

Might only be 3 feet tall after hurricane Dean.

Only got just under three inches Mike but with july's rain it is just a swamp here. I think some of my bamboo are developeing snorkles.
Steve I will send you some more pics of my clone-X I swear it has doubled its hight this year. And you have got to see that Oldhammi cutting that I talked about. This is it's second year and it is looking like it will surpass my feild divisions. Can not figure why it is doing so good compared to the other old hamm's. Realy wish I could.
