2007 Boo Shooting Season! : Not just for tropicals anymore!
Fellow Bamboo Enthusiasts,
Last year we had a similar thread, and it was interesting to compare shooting times of similar plants in various geographic locations. The pics were great too. It was one of my favorite threads.
I know you tropical growers have been shooting for a while but perhaps you could post some of your early shooting pics here, and then we can tell the whole story in one thread.
I have new shoots on Indocalamus latifolius 'Solidus'. It's in a bucket but it has been outside all winter so I guess that counts.

Not a very good pic. I'll try to do better in the future.

RE: 2007 Boo Shooting Season! : Not just for tropicals anymo

9*f last night. Will report back at a later date - unless my house sells before shooting season and I dig everything up. With expecting our 2nd child any day, this will be an adventurous few months!

Well, with the winter shooting chimnomobamusa and certain chusquea there's always something shooting here
But to wake up the season here's some pics of the first Phyllostachys to shoot this year:
Phyllostachys edulis bi-colour-

It's still in the greenhouse, so I suppose thats cheating- but at least it's starting to produce some nice sized shoots-about time too- it's only taken five years to get it to this size

Bamboo...Please note... This plant is seriously addictive and you may lose interest in other, less rewarding plants!

Today I noticed the first shoot of the year on my outside plants... B. multi. 'Alphonse Karr'.

Does anyone know when P. Aureosulcata spectabilis is supposed to shoot here in SE NC?
Thanks,
Eric

Eric,
I would assume you'll see spectabilis shoots within two weeks or less (especially if your temps are already in the 70*s). P. aureosulcata types are pretty early. Don't bet the farm on this, as I'm still figuring out when they come up in my zone.

Last year I started seeing shoots about the first of April from Sasa veitchii, Pleioblastus viridistriatus 'Chrysophyllus' and Hibanobambusa tranquillans 'Shiroshima'. About the 10th of April the Phyllostachys aureosulcata started shooting. About the 21st of April saw the Semiarundinaria yashadake 'Kimmei', Pseudosasa japonica and Indocalamus tessellatus shooting. The last of April had the Arundinaria gigantea and the Phyllostachys nigra. The Shibataea kumasaca waited until May 5th and the Fargesia nitida waited until June 11th to start putting up shoots.
A bit early, but I am already watching for shoots.

Another new shoot yesterday on B. m. 'Alphonse Karr', and also the first shoot of the year on B. m. 'Golden Goddess'.

Thanks Rick,
Last year Moso was already shooting by now!! No new shoots yet. Since my Aureosulcata was field dug division Last year, I was wondering what to expect. Thanks again.

My spectabilis is putting up a nice shoot right now considering it is a division taken in Oct from Byron ARS. Also have textilis, veitchii, lancifolia, putting up shoots. Many others are putting out new leaves and I expect the ground to start breaking in mass before long. Small shoots were put up by hale, quadrangularis and a few potted varieties over the past 2 months.

Hi,
I'm new to the forum. I live in Zone5b Western side of Cleveland Ohio. I think my property and the small area around my property is a Micro climate, because my Bamboo does so well. My P.Aureosulcata is shooting now like crazy, some shoots make it and some dry up and die in the shoots, mostly ok. Our weather is crazy, the last 3 days it has been 70 but this weekend it is going to be 30 degrees. Poor shoots, I hope they make it, maybe I'll put some mulch on top, what do you think? MzKrista

All the Ph. nigra rhizomes I dug last year and threw in pots are shooting. Nothing else has emerged yet.

Still no shoots yet from the bamboo outside.
I did notice my Fargesia nitida had finally uncurled its leaves and actually looked in reasonable shape after the harsh winter. I was pleasantly surprised.
My Phyllostachys nigra looks like its leaf buds survived, so it should re-leaf. Also a few leaves survived the winter.
While I haven't seen any shoots from the Hibanobambusa tranquillans 'Shiroshima', I would swear it is putting out more and more rhizomes into the surrounding area every day. The dirt looks pushed aside and the rhizome looks new. Has anybody else noticed rhizome growth before shooting?

If you have Moso to compare, aureosulcata should start a little after that. At least, that's what all the books and those that have both state.
