Alphonse Karr AKA Buddha Belly

Post by sannton »

Well, here it is 2 1/2 months later and we still have the same bamboo . The nursery said we could return it after the cooler weather arrived. They have never answered my email about getting a real AK bamboo. The bamboo is looking really pretty and I hate to dig it up. It is actually going crazy. On my smugmug http://sannton.smugmug.com/ site there are some before photos if you want to check it out. I am totally amazed. In the last few weeks we have these really tall single culms just shooting up far above the rest of the plant. They are actually filling out more rather than growing much taller. We were watering them a lot because we also put out new sod and the bamboo is on the same timer. I still plan to dig them up because of the difference in the height and also the cold tolerance.
I have noticed that a few of the plants has whitish stuff on them that looks fuzzy, like maybe a fungus. I just don't know. So, do you all still think these are Buddha Belly Bamboo? The ones you all named as Golden Goddess are looking good too but not as green or bushy.
It is still in the low 90s so it will be another month before we dig them up. Sad.

It looks like you have mealie bugs on the Buddha Belly. Water the plants in real good for a few days then dig them now. There is no reason to wait until fall to dig out the wrong plant unless the cooler weather is for you! Alphonse Karr should not be hard to find, but you may have to drive to get them or mail order.

The cooler weather is for us. I will look for a thread on mealy bug but then again, I am not sure I care because we have to take all of the plants back to the nursery in large garbage bags. I think they will just toss them which is a shame because they are so beautiful and full. In the photos you can see how they are so full you can't even see the ground around them. They are growing out, not up. I am amazed at how quickly they have filled out.
We will probably have to drive down to Austin to Bamboo Bend to get the AK bamboo. I haven't found any around here, at least none that is the real thing. Now we are a little worried about trusting someone else.
Below is a photo of the bamboo out I found out in the country. It is growing in a large thick concrete container, or was. Now it is out of the container. No telling how long it has been there. I spied it on the way to a retreat center near Decatur. I don't know what kind it is either but it looks like the ones we have that you all said were Golden Goddess.

The picture is not quite big enough, but just from the looks of it, it looks to be something like say "Phy. aurea" or some other temperate bamboo.
