How many boots tall do you think the culms were?

Henon would be my #1 guess, followed by any one of the following- vivax, moso, bambusoides.... take your pick! and in the spring, If you can get a shot of the shoots, we kin tell ya fer sure!

The grove is about 10 miles from my house in mississippi, 100 miles south of TN. The guy who owns it doesnt know what kind it is. He told me he planted it about 1993. He also said, "come back and get ya some". I said , "yes sir".

Looks like a mature grove of phyllostachys nigra henon to me.

I wished I could see such an impressive grove in my area.

Just make sure that if you go for a dig, to get a massive size rootball with lots of rhizome so they don't spend a whole year trying to recover. If there are smaller culms on the edge of the grove, digging a large rootball with multiple canes might be better than trying to take one of the 4 inch culms.

I'm 98% sure it's vivax, at least what you have your measuring device on seems to be. Notice the pressure crack in the base of the culm in the background on the first pic. The nodes have that subtle slightly off center stacking from node to node, and the plants have large leaves which all points to vivax. Could perhaps be a mixed grove, some of the culms do look like henon.

I never think about it being a mixed grove! I was looking at the photo and thinking "OK, it's got dark node rings", then the next photo "no, it's got white node rings"... so thought it was the lighting doing that. Also thought "those culms are really green, but those are more yellow, and those others are gray... man, I have no idea what this is!" I'm pretty clueless with IDs anyway, unless it's plain aureosulcata. =)

The pressure crack is one of those details I'd never think to look for. Nice tip!

I don't think it is dulcis. Dulcis is short and fat for its height, and tapers quickly at its top.It also has gentle curves in the last 1/4 of the culm. This bamboo appears tall, and upright. Mature dulcis will often have subtle yellow strips on the lower nodes of mature culms. Spring will tell the story so take some pics of the shoots then we can give you a positive ID.
