Shooting P.Nigra

Post by Lot 112 »

After today's rains I went outside a took a look @ my Nigra & I discovered several new shoots. In late December/early January Los Angeles had record rains, when I returned on January 5th I discovered new shoots. Prior to the rains we had a few days days of triple digit temperatures.

Typically my Nigra doesn't shoot until late March. Will these shoots reach their full size prior to the period when it typically begins to shoot? There are several shoots, the more waste leaf I removed the more shoots I discovered.

I'm thinkin' your alright here. They look to me more like whipshoots, than true culm shoots. Just rhizome tips turned upward.

ya those are just whipshoots, they lack the wavy culm sheath tip things that real nigra shoots have

Some of the shoots pictured are "whip shoots" but there are actual shoots in the center of the plant that I could not photograph due to the waste leaf.

They all look like whip shoots except for the last pic, but it's a little blurry.
