Need ID in NC

Post by bonnie »

I would like to identify two bamboo species that grow all over town here in Southern Pines, NC, Zone 8. One is large with large stands that have been around for decades. The other is reedier, smaller, branches immediately. I will post the photos of the larger one first. Most all of the new shoots are up, could only find a couple to photograph.

Looks like Phyllostacys nigra 'Henon' to me.

Looks like Henon. Oddly, the culms here do not grow grey, they grow yellow, unless they are in shade.
Happy trails...

down on this end of the state, they actually are grey, as they acheive large size, and as long as they have decent water and nutrients. stick them in an area where they have to fight to survive, and they yellow, and the leaves are much more pale than normal. I have never seen a grove achive large diameter culms in those conditions though.

About a mile from here there is a shopping mall and they have scads of Henon. Its all yellow, and they have some culms 5 inched across. I have seen several other groves here that size, all happy and thriving, and all yellow. The only partially grey Henon I have seen here is across the lake, and they have a 10'x10' box filled with Henon, stressed from being crowded, and in a shady area. My Henon is all yellow. It seems happy enough.

Thats pretty impressive! They must have the largest bamboo in the state, I have not even seen any vivax that size anywhere here in Oregon.
