Opp. Kill-Wasp

Post by Eastlandia »

I have a problem...
My greenhouse is constructed out of Pseudosasa amabilis...
And there are cracks in the culms...perfect place for wasps...
I don't want to use the spray b/c i can just knock out their nests with a stick and they will leave...but that's the problem... I cant get to the nests b/c of the diaphragms. I don't want to hurt the plastic so I cant use the spray... and I need "control" of the greenhouse by the end of September...
*#%$*$ Voles, now wasps.....

I'm having trouble envisioning this, but have you thought about filling the culms? I don't know what sort of effect it would have on the culms, or how many there are to fill, but I would try some insulating foam sealant. Hilti makes a pretty good one for about $5 per can. If you haven't used it around your house before, it comes in an aerosol can with a directional nozzle about the size of a drinking straw. It comes out as some sort of liquid and then foams up and hardens to fill almost any space, big or small. It dries in a few minutes and then you can go back and slice off any extra foam with a sharp knife. It's waterproof and and paintable if you don't like the tan color. I've used it to fill in some places where wasps used to build nests.

Good luck!

Maggie,
Thank you very much for sharing that idea. I've used that polyurethane foam for many things, including the filling of voids, but I hadn't thought of using it to fill culm internode voids until you mentioned it. Seems like an excellent idea and use for this foam. It migh even help increase the life of the culms.

As sticky and tacky as this stuff is, when uncured, I think it would entomb at least a few wasps.
