hi everybody ,

first of all , sorry for my english but i m french and as it s well known , we are really bad in languages !!

ok i m totally new to bamboo , i ve just read a few articles about the subject and got amazed by that herb , how it works and so on ...

i ve just bought a land in the Maranhao in the north-east of Brazil , i gonna live there and i d like to grow some bamboos at least to try ' cause from everything i ve read , it looks like i ve chosen the worst place possible !!! here s why :

2 seasons :
july to december, dry , no rain at all , sunny , and the worst almost 30 knots wind everyday !!
january to june , really wet , humid , rains almost everyday , hot , no wind

above all , my land is 500 m from the sea , and it s just sand !!!

ok , the good news are : i can water as much as i want , i can find some soil and do a mix with sand , i ve a place 5m x 5m which is quite sheltered from the wind and with semi-shade .

so here are my questions :

1/ how deep the soil should be ? 50 cm ? 1m ?
2/ are there any species more resistant to the wind ?
3/ i know i can find easily inland lots of bambusa vulgaris and guadua angustifolia (don t know if the guadua will be able to grow in that extreme conditions ) , what do you think the best ll be ?
4/ in dreams , i would love my garden to be full of green , but looks like it s quite hard to find a runner species there , would you know one ?
5/ if i try with the B. vulgaris , how much space do i have to put between each plant to let them grow comfortably ?

all right , that s all !!!! sorry for that " foreign intrusion" , and thanks to anybody who ll find the courage to answer that mail .

being in cape verde for the moment , ( not a single tree on sal island !!!!) , internet connection is , let s say , tricky , middle-aged speed , so do not be offended if i don' t answer quickly .

thanks again isma

Some Guadua acts like a runner. Here's a yellow culmed type from north of Brasilia, but it looks more clumping-
