Gansu 95-2

Post by Markj »

Anyone trying this  It's a shame it's a tad obscure at the mo', not that sure many have heard of it but I've bet you heard of it's 'brother' Gansu 95-1 which turned out to be Fargesia rufa and then dracocephela 'Rufa'.

Gansu 95-2 was a Jos V Palen intro, a short, bright red culmed, shade demanding plant. Unfortunately as a nitida form it flowered pretty quick, I'm not sure many would of been large enough to have a hope of surviving the full flowering, mine croaked within a year but luckily it set viable seed.

It was a good job Steve in France/DC was visiting at the time as I don't really get on well with seedlings  and he stepped up to mark to have a go. Fortunately when he moved back Stateside, the 30 or so seedlings now a year or more older and looking very healthy were passed back to me :D

I think their into year 3 at the mo', and the difference between them is just amazing, most still need pretty much full shade but others are sun tolerant, the culm colour ranges from a bright red to dark purple and the form is very different as well. Be very interesting to see how they get on.

Snapped a few pics to try and show the difference, it's been hard to get good detail as most of the plants are still very small, and in very heavy shade

Hopefully you can see these....

Looking forward to seeing how they mature, and if they return to the standard nitida form  Their must be others with seed of this form, any luck so far :?:

It's as tough as old boots as well, even the smallest of seedlings were un-touched by last winter here, it was a fairly high collection, got to be worth a try for the lower zone guys/gals :D

I have only 2 seedlings of Gansu 95-2 from 2006 year, but my friend has more. I think about 30 or 40 seedlings. There is big difference between them. We will see if there will be at least one with good growt habit.
