Just a tip thats works for me, I grow my new plants in the garden in heavily composted and manured loam for two years until they're a bushy 8 ft. then move them where I need a screen. I figure 1 yr of full sun is equivalent to 3 yrs of shade, in 2 yrs you can get growth that will take 5-6 yrs if you start them in the shade. This presumes one has the room to devote a garden space to bamboo which I find far more gratifying than any vegetable or fruit I've ever grown.

We all have full sun, your's just happens to be in the top of the trees in your yard. The best bamboo I've found for a partial shade situation is Arrow bamboo, a hardy, drought-tolerant, non-aggressive, quick screening, large leaved runner that is endless source of high quality garden stakes. As far as loam goes, no amount of patience will give you loam. Loam is lovingly nurtured by a knowing hand that recognizes the circle of life and claims that knowledge as power by recycling death into rich new life, is there a higher calling?

i agree the arrow bamboo is a beauty, just not in my yard!
