I get very excited about bamboo that grow new shoots at least twice a big as the last year's growth. The Parker Giant is one of those. Just took this picture today of a new shoot.
Can't wait until mine is as big as Chuck's. I got mine from him.

Kind of reminds me of a D. Giganteous that I saw last week. It is amazing how it could upsize so quickly.
How do you think the Parker compares with the Giganteous? Are they similiar in growing rate?

That IS real. The D. Giganteus doesn't take off as quick here. I took the pic this morning. The D. Giganteus does great in a pot under some shade... but, slows down considerably out in the open. The Parker does great no matter what!!

I don't know how I missed this thread. 
That is definitely impressive. I just got a small Parker this spring, so I hope I can post some similar pictures in the near future.

I have two Parkers in the ground. Since I took that picture, I have noticed about 4 new shoots on each. One is even larger than that one. Really likes it down here. Can't wait to see the shoots next year!!!!

Very nice Dudley!! Sure makes you feel good when the boo rewards you with a jumper like that. Makes all the ground preparation and extra care worth it.

You'll really love it when it gets to this size!
This pic is of a clump in my back yard that's 3 yrs old. I'm hoping for culms in the 3+" range this season but with the drought we've had for the last 3-4 years that seems improbable. One can always hope!

Anymore, I use a backhoe to dig a huge (approximately 300 gallon hole) and then back fill with premium compost and regular soil (1/2 and 1/2) then elevate the soil level about 1 - 2 feet and then cover with cypress mulch. After a month or so, I add a little soil sulfur to make our alkaline soil a little more acidic and then add some fertilizers.dudley wrote:ground preparation???

I went out the farm today after being out of town for a week or so and man, I have quite a few of those big jumpers on both D. Parker giants. The ones from the first picture are now about 9 feet tall. I can't believe how many are coming up. The biggest is in the 3 inch range. We are getting plenty of rain which is unusual for this time of year, so they are going crazy.
I wish I had planted quite a few more Parker Giants than anything else now after seeing how well they like our area and heat. The wind... last year's hurricane... the heat... nothing seems to touch them. Definitely the perfect bamboo for our area... if you want a really big one.
We will see how big it grows. The leaves are getting larger and thicker... very tough. I am still holding our hope for the two I have in pots from culm node propagation right after the hurricane. Still has new growth. We will see.

Not nearly in the same league as yours, but my Madake sent up a nice surprise last week. The dead sprig in the back is the 2 gal plant I set out last November. The very small shoot in the middle is the "survival shoot" that came up about a month or so ago. I figured that was it as it had such a hard winter, and was just happy to see it was still alive. Last week I was pleasantly surprised to see the new shoot well more than twice the size of the original come up - here's hoping for more of the same!
