Before and after photos of bamboo

The purpose of starting this thread is to show how bamboos will grow over a given time frame. Hopefully it will be helpful to somebody.

24 July 2008 My new 1 gallon moso came with only 1 culm when I bought it in June.


24 July 2009 This plant now has 8 culms(4 from this spring) and5 new shoots from early July which are breaking the 30inch mark, likely to get over 3 feet. Theres also about 8-12 newer shoots at the bottom. I'm staking down 2 culms to increase sun exposure, laying down lots of manure, bamboo mulch(silicate), ironite and grass fertilizer to hopefully get all these new shoots to maturity.


6 August 2009 The early July shoots are leafing out, all between 3 & 4 feet tall. There are over 20 shoots still on the rise all between 1/6 and 1/3inches, one of the newest ones about 1/3 inch in diameter will hopefully top the 4ft mark and with it's behavior so far, I'm expecting many more shoots on the way. Its amazing how none of them have aborted yet.


6 August 2010 This is now a large bush with culms between 4 and 6ft mostly leaned over so they look shorter and has been thinned to around 70 culms when it originally had over 150. At this rate, next year's culms should be in the 6-10ft range.


June 2011 Top killed old culms culled, and new culms at 6-near 8ft.

Here's another plant that I'll start doing before and after pictures of. It was planted in June of 2009 as a field division which put out a shoot after about a month, and in the same year it put out several rhizomes to really bush out in 2010 enough for me to have taken 1 small division from the edge a couple months ago.

July 2009 This shows 1 shoot that is reaching around 4ft however that's as tall as it got despite the larger diameter since it didn't have enough energy to get any taller.


Some time in the winter after a hard freeze of 4.6F 2010 This plant got quite a bit defoliated after a very cold night since it was not covered in any snow and received no winter protection which it probably should have for its 1st winter.


25 August 2010 This plant has put out shoots continually since late April which are a bit downsized in diameter however with the added foliage from culms generated this spring, some of the newer shoots are breaking the 5ft mark and rhizomes are clearly running under the mulch. I expect shoots to double in height/diameter next year.


June 2011: more spread, no upsize even after 2 years.

Here's a nice one. This parvifolia whip shoot was dug up last July when it was pretty well leafed out. I used juicy roots as well as root stimulator that probably helped stabilize the plant. I had no idea what was going on inside the pot, but with 12 new shoots coming up this year, mostly along the edge of the pot, this little whip shoot obviously had enough time to generate its own rhizomes, and become a well established 10 gallon bamboo in only 1 year. Hopefully I'll find more of these whips.

Here's the parvifolia growth since May of 2009.

May 2009, under 1ft tall


June 2009, shoots at 2ft


June 2010, shoots breaking the 4ft mark.


June 2011, shoots breaking the 11ft mark.


All the while, I have taken around a dozen divisions varying from full field divisions to rhizomes, so it may have grown even a bit faster if I left it alone. Pretty cool considering where it started eh.

Atrovaginata is also pretty interesting so I'll show some pics of that too.

Here's how my phyllostachys parvifolia looks right before and after culling the old culms and taking a few culm divisions. It got a nice layer of manure and a thorough watering to hopefully keep it happy and growing. This species creates very dense foliage so I don't mind it looking a bit thin right now. I took divisions mainly from the side facing the camera angle. I never take a division out of the middle of the grove since I like keeping the grove in one piece.

Here are some pictures of my spectabilis comparing its growth from last year to this year at the same time of the year. The tallest shoots are over 5ft tall, taller than the fall shoots from last year already without any signs of branching yet. I'm expecting them to get over 8ft.

Well...I guess I can contribute some photos...

Here's my Rubro from November, 2010 to June 2012.

Notice shoot growth between the 2nd and third photos which are taken one week apart.

And the dead white culm to the right is the corpse of the original culm.

Here's the phyllostachys parvifolia after I dug out some huge 10+ culm field divisions. I basically took everything that originated from 3 of the original rhizomes which eventually produced on average noticeably smaller culms. Needed to make sure I didn't split up the bamboo on both the divisions as well as the mother plant because I'm not interested in creating multiple competing rhizome systems. I think it looks a lot less congested now. I know it might affect the size of next year's shoots, but I still like my bamboos having an open look.
