overwintered p.nigra in containers

Post by mrdingo »

Hi folks

I'm in zone 6, southwestern Ontario and tried overwintering Phyllostachys nigra in containers in a sheltered heated garage this past season...and it worked! Though the leaves are a bit crispy-edged and dry the plants have new shoots and seem to be alive!

some questions:
1. will the plants shed these leaves and sprout new ones?
2. should I be concerned about putting these plants in full sun after they have been sheltered away from UV for so long?

thanks for any and all advice!

1. Yes
2. Yes

1b. If the culms are alive.

2b. They will need to be hardened off outside, otherwise, new leaves on the new culms will get leaf scorch.

thanks for the response, sonOfdad!...you make a good point about 'if' the culms are still alive...the plants all have new shoots sprouting up...should I expect new leaves on existing culms soon too?

Dear mrdingo,
I have made the mistake of allowing new shoots to grow and develop inside. Like Lance said, the shoots seem to have a hard time hardening. I have also noticed that if you move the bucket from inside to outside while the shoots are coming of age, they have a much higher chance of Aborting. Hope everything goes as well in the future,
