Post by parkeey »

i have a the bright yellow bamboo Phyllostachys vivax 'Aureocaulis'

my question is i have planted it without a rhizome barrier, i want the canes to get thick as poss, if i just leave it without rhizome protection could i just like take clumps off from the runners and re-pot ???

Yep :D
Bamboo...Please note... This plant is seriously addictive and you may lose interest in other, less rewarding plants!

Keep in mind that those rhizomes will be spreading out quite a bit, even farther than the new shoots indicate. Unless you have a very large area and no concern about how far the rhizomes may go, you'll want to rhizome prune every year.

Even in the uk it'll run maybe 6 - 10 feet in a season and not necessarily shoot on these rhizomes until the following year or even the year after. If you keep it well mulched it will normally run close to the surface making the runners easier to spot.
I have two vivax with bamboo barrier here and their still sizing up nicely.
