I'm slow sometimes!

I thought the sources link referred to references for the information on the bambooweb species list.
Sorry about that.

I'm in Central PA, near Hershey, in zip code 17042.

Thanks guys,

jp

I've decided on the bisettii. I like the semiarundinaria, too, but I don't think I have room for them and the bisettii.

Now I need to buy them. Needmore said that his bisettii are typically too big to ship and that he won't know if he has any smaller ones until spring.

Do ya'll have suggestions for a vendor? Anyone I should avoid?

Thanks,

jp

Didn't you say you had a source for plants in 3 gal pots?

Hi guys. Ya'll sent me great vendor recommendations. I wish I could afford to use all of them!

I have a related question.

Many vendors sell by pot size and also sell larger "division" size.

As I have understood the responses so far, the more rhizome mass, the better. A large pot full of rhizomes will spread much more quickly that a taller plant with smaller rhizome mass.

How does this apply to buying divisions? For example, what would be a better bet:

a 5-gallon plant that had been potted for a year with rhizomes pushing out of the pot

OR

a relatively larger field division that had been dug a couple weeks earlier?

Thanks,

jp

I guess I would have to say "that depends". Generally, the more bio mass of plant you can get for the money, the better, as long as there are enough roots.

The advantage of a plant that has been potted is that it will be more stabilized and need less attention to watering when first planted. Probably also transport better. But root boundedness can be a problem if it has been in the same pot too long.

A vigorous , freshly dug field division can be a good way to go as well. But the operation is more weather sensitive. You don't want to transplant in heat, drought or just before frost. Be sure there are enough roots to support tops.
