Which Bamboo to grow?

Post by hydroid »

Hello everyone, just joined the site, I'm new to growing bamboo and after seeing some pics in the bamboo identification section "what kind of timber bamboo"... it is what I am looking for, a big diameter clumper.
I have Kanapaha, mutabilis, textilis, but I don't think it will get the diameter I am looking for, which is say "soda can" diameter.
I live in zone 9 along the Gulf Coast and would like suggestions for a good size clumping bamboo that won't run away. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your reply, I was looking at the Oldhamii, and it says min zone is 9a. I get different quotes about my zone (Gulf Shores, Al.) but now thinking I'm somewhere between zone 8b and 9a.
I'm about 4 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico and about 150 yds from a freshwater creek. It would be planted on the south side of my house, do you think it would fare ok? Thanks

I am about 5 miles from the ICWW no permenant water any closer and a zone 9a/8b. 8b during cold events for sure. Do you get hard freezes or just go down to freezing one night and back up during an average winter. Couple years back we had a hard freeze low twentys with a dip into the high teens. Knocked my old hammis to the ground. They are coming back fine this year even with being in a drought for the last four. (Drought seems to be breaking finally)
Do look into the punting pole it will do better.

I'm about half mile from ICWW, and you area sounds very similar to mine. We get an occaisional freeze for one or two nights then back in the 40's and 50's at night. I'm thinking it will survive but not thrive very well on those cold winters. I'll check out the Punting Pole. Thanks
