Good discussion. this grove is about 25' x 10 feet and pretty much all the new growth is diving down from the top section towards the trench. I rarely cut rhizome sections way down in the trench anymore..
But I hear Alan's point. If I ever wanted to dig this out, there is probably a mat of old, dead matter at the bottom that would be hell to dig out.
I do threaten to remove this one ever so often- P. Nigra is not ideal for Texas, and if I ever sell this house, the new owner might not want to deal with maintenance and become the scourge, allowing this to escape and run free. It is a huge section of my small urban garden that could be devoted to something else, but the thought of total removal efforts have always been delayed.
The plus side...It is beautiful. And boy does it send off some serious shoots now that it is mature.

It is good to remember you can lift and cut(or just break) escaping rhizomes with forklift attachment to any tractor, skid steer, ect. If you are not trying to lift out a clump and just expose rhizome with little ground damage, remove one of the two pallet forks.
Do not use this method if you do not know where and to what depth any utilities are on the property you are digging.

Re: Bamboo trench
When I removed some Yellow Groove from a large area I didn't bother with digging out the rhizomes, I just cut the culms at ground level and regularly mowed. The rhizomes rotted in the ground fairly quickly.

The legal issues that will arise when the undead walk the earth are legion, and addressing them all is well beyond what could reasonably be accomplished in this brief Essay. Indeed, a complete treatment of the tax issues alone would require several volumes.

That's why I think deeper ones would rot even faster if they really stay deep it might be easy to kill off.foxd wrote:When I removed some Yellow Groove from a large area I didn't bother with digging out the rhizomes, I just cut the culms at ground level and regularly mowed.
