Phyllostachys kwangsiensis encore

Post by Steve in France »

My Phyllostachys kwangsiensis has made some decent shoots this year . No flowering last year and a real gain in shoot numbers this year.
I love the fussy velvet culms of kwangsiensis .

Steve - Has kwang generally survived flowering and seed production with most growers?

We got some UK seed and it came up in October. They're now in 3 gallon pots - 5 good ones and 5 contorted runts. I reckon the one brute in the front will be a meter tall before September 1st.

Not sure , I talked to Markj the other day and his is still partial flowering, down from full flowering. He has two kwangsiensis one flower later than the other. I'm not sure if the second one is in good condition or if it's failing , he did tell my it's just I cannot be sure of the facts on the second. It's also not a plant that a lot of people were growing in the UK or France. I bet the German guys have a better answer. Good going with the new gen kwangsiensis , now you only have to wait 10 years or so to see if they have a good looking form :D . If I had a bigger place I'd love to grow a few seedlings out.

Mine flowered heavily and set zero seed 3 springs ago I think, the following year it produced teeny ground cover looking shoots and flowered on the remaining couple of prior year culms, last year more ground cover looking stuff and no flowers, this year it is sizing back up and and producing several small shoots.

I sowed some of these UK sourced seeds last year.
Seedlings still pretty small though. About 8 inches or so.
Hopefully when the weather eventually warms up, they will get going.
