What have I done ?? Please help

Post by rush »

:( I devided my holochrysa today as it's early spring or spring in uk . The plant I had was in a 10L pot. I cut through the middle with a sharp saw knife . Potted one in ground and the other in a pot . Following day I found all the leaves curled up or wilted and it looked so dried :( . I am panicking now as it's my favourite boo . I watered it well this afternoon but no change in the condition . Leaves still all curled. The root ball on the two divisions is a size of my my hand before I potted . Did not have a huge division rootball but was enough to get two parts . I did water it well but the leaves are all still curled after a day and not in a good state . I have SHOCKED it well I think . I don't know if I killed it . Please see pic

This evening I covered with some fleece whilst the leaves are wilted or curled as in the morning there is some minor Frost and then it gets a bit sunny . It's only 12 C in UK where I am so not too heavy sun . Don't know if to keep it all covered .
I need some advise please if there is anything I should do to save it ? :( Should I keep watering or is there anything else I can do .?

I've done the same exact thing with a new division many times and it is hit and miss, but it sometimes depends on the species as well as time of the year. I believe you should be able to get yours to recover by putting a white plastic bag over each of them, but don't expect them to shoot this year as the energy will be allocated towards trying to recover.

In dividing a division, it's best to ensure that both sides have adequate root mass, and the development of new rhizomes in order to minimize the transplant shock.

Can I please ask why a plastic bag ? Would it not boil it or cause too much heat . I have covered it with fleece though would this be ok and should I water it more than normal ?

Excess water cannot compensate for too many lost or damaged roots. The roots must heal before the plant can regain vigor and are best not drowned.

Water loss can be reduced by maintaining high humidity around the leaves. Using the fleece you have, you might be able to dampen it with water and place it around your bamboo to create a tunnel of high humidity.

As the leaves start to unfurl, they will gradually require less protection as the weeks progress.

Unfortunately, aggressively dividing smaller bamboo plants yields a higher risk of loss compared to dividing larger plants. :|

And do not overwater it. It may show signs of dehydration, but you can easily drown it if you don't keep an eye on soil moisture. Keep it in humid environment, protected from strong light exposure and wait a week or two for it to recover a bit. When you'll see that leaves don't curl, gradually give it more light, and after a while it will easily tolerate sun exposure again. You can also cut some of the branches off to reduce leaf mass. With less foliage, roots should be able to supply enough water. I hope both start recovering soon!
