Would a propane heater use up oxygen if the bamboo is tarped

Post by mshaffer »

I have a 60'x40' tarp over my bamboo. I've been using a 5000w electric heater. i have a propane one but I'm not sure if it would use up the oxygen under the tarp. What do you think? The electric one is going to cost a lot the new few days if I leave it on..

I t would indeed use up the oxygen, produce CO as O levels drop and stop burning leading to a potentially dangerous situation for you and the boos. As well it gives off water vapour which would quickly freeze on the interior surfaces. No idea what other gases are given off in such a scenario.

Boos would like the CO2 but if they are dormant they will not respire or use it. But the propane heater would use up all the O2 and flame out, and then fill the area with propane gas. Not good... highly flammable!
Happy trails...

It would be an issue if your tarp would be airtight. I doubt it's completely sealed with no or only minimal gas exchange capability, usually it's quite drafty. :)

You would get a lot of CO2 and water, both beneficial to plants inside, but it might also promote mold growth or premature waking up of dormant bamboos - especially combined with higher temperatures.

I'd also be very reluctant to use a propane heater in a non-professional setup (where an expert installed the device and ensured common safety standards)

Unless you are trying to build a tropical greenhouse I would say try to improve insulation and use a few low energy devices such as outdoor light bulbs together with a thermostat.
Much safer and cheaper in the long run.
